GRAND proto - Ground array status meeting at IHEP (August 21, 2014)

Main conclusions:


* A solution has to be studied to guarantee that detectors (and in particular PMTs) will not risk any damage due to bad weather (and snow in particular) in th elong run after their deployment on site. One solution could be a hut under which the detector would be placed. It would consist in a rigid metallic frame, with a plastic plate on the top and a waterproof cloath covering it. This will be studied in more details. Also it seems safer that the detector is fixed to its support, because of the wind.

* Deployment will not take place before Spring 2015. It is important to perform tests as complete as possible in IHEP before that. It is decideed that 3 detection units will be installed in IHEP, using the final DAQ system (optical data transmission + ADC card in computer and soft trigger). DAQ elements will be transfered from Ulastai. Zhang Zianli + Zhao Meng will contribute to the DAQ setup in IHEP. It is important that the detection setup can be validated before deployment in Ulastai, through the detection of the single muon peak in particular.

* Also antennas will be brought back from Ulastai for radio tests at IHEP & YBJ.


* Significant progresses have been accomplished in the last months. Still, some simulation results remain hard to understand, in particular the fact that detection probability of showers up to 60° zenith angle have significantly better detection probability in the horizontal configuration (scintillator facing the sky) rather than the tilted one. Zhaoyang will perform simulation without the lead plate to try improving our understanding of this surprising result.

* When this result is understood, next step will probably consist in adapting the simulation to the actual setup. In particular, detector thickness should be brought down to 2cm, and the DAQ response (frequency bandwidth, digitization, soft trigger...) should be taken into account.

* Finaly the layout (nb of units & spacing) and the parameter space (E, direction, core position, ...) corresponding to a ~100% detection probability will have to be defined.
