Innovation & Advancement

In the spirit of independent innovation, and in line with the unfolding central scientific research, LHAASO is about to bring important breakthroughs in pushing forward scientific frontier, and in developing detection technology, respectively:

1) Aiming at the puzzle of the century-origin of cosmic rays, we should seize this opportunity to make a breakthrough in the research.

2) Make good use of the high altitude of YBJ to top the world by three criteria in gamma astronomy observation and cosmic ray experiments:

High Sensitivity:

By investing in large areaμdetectors, which brings about the highest sensitivity of gamma rays detection at high energy end, we could endow LHAASO with powerful detecting capacity on new sources, and accurate measurement for gamma energy spectra of sources at three multi-magnitude wide energy regions, so as to forge LHAASO into the most powerful detector in the world, which can solve the problem of galactic cosmic rays origin.

Powerful All-Sky Survey:

In energy ranges of TeV, we could take the advantage of wide field of view, full duty circle, and sufficient sensitivity for extended sources of the large-area WCDA to accomplish the strongest all-sky survey and search ability for gamma rays sources, and large quantities of extra-galactic sources are expected to be detected. This and the IACT detection technology share complementary advantages.

Wide Energy Spectra:

The measurement of cosmic rays energy spectra will cover the widest energy ranges, from 20 TeV to a few EeV, which would connect the most accurate direct cosmic rays measurement results nowadays with the measurement results of cosmic ray ground experiments (TA and AUGER) of the largest scale, and pass the absolute energy-index to ultra-high energy cosmic rays experiment above 1018 eV, and this could back up the ankle's cause of formation and the truncation of GZK.

Besides, LHAASO is featured by multi-parameter combined observation at wide energy ranges, which could help to measure the air shower in all directions to the utmost, and to acquire enough information, so that the best performance of discriminating primary cosmic ray particles will be delivered, and mono-component cosmic ray energy spectra measurement will be realized at energy ranges as wide as possible, thus "knees" of mono-component energy spectra will be found.
