Meeting Minutes - 2011-09-07

Attendants: Wenjing, Ran, Li Sha, Ka WenXiao, Fabio

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Secretary: Fabio

  • Introduction [Fabio]
    • Welcome to Li Sha and Ka WenXiao who just joined.
  • OpenStack Swift [Ran]
    • Ran installed Swift on the tesbted. Configuration: 1 proxy node + 5 storage nodes. The client is installed in a virtual machine in her laptop.
    • She did some tests with Cyberduck (on Windows) and experienced some issues. However, the tests performed using the st commands went well. The user issued the st command needed admin-level privileges.
    • She also tried to use CURL as the client-side interface to the REST API provided by Swift without much success.
    • We agreed that Li and Ka will take over Ran's work. They will start by performing some initial tests aiming at creating several thousands empty files in Swift. The goal is to get familiar with Swift and to have baseline comparison figures of meta-data performance to be compared with the figures obtained by Wenjing using Cassandra.
  • Cassandra [Wenjing]
    • Wenjing re-visited her test suite for Cassandra-based metadata storage. This test involves creating 4 millions directories and sub-directories (nested in a 4 level-depth hierarchy). Before tuning, the performance was 70 (mkdir) operations/sec. After some tuning in the usage of the Cassandra Pyhton API the observed performance was 160 operations/sec. This figure is to be compared to 1000 operations per second delivered by a comparable (though not strictly similar) Lustre test.
  • AOB
    • Fabio will write a draft of an abstract of a contribution to be submitted to CHEP 2012 (May 2012, New York) and circulate it for comments.
    • Fabio wishes good luck to Ran with her new duties while at CERN during the coming year and thanks her for her valuable contribution to this project.
  • Next meeting:
    • October 19th 2011, 2:30 pm, Fabio's office
