Meeting Minutes - 2011-06-15

  • OpenStack Swift [Ran]
    • Ran has been exploring the Swift APIs and CLIs, in particular the administrative commands (for configuring the ring, adding users, etc.). She noticed in particular that once the ring is configured its configuration (for instance replication factor) cannot be modified on the fly.
    • Her testing environment is "Swift All in One" or SAIO in her computer.The software distribution provides ready-to-use commands for uploading files (into the SWIFT cluster), downloading files, listing the contents and deleting files.
    • There is also a REST-based API for building applications against SWIFT and there are some language drivers ready to use (Python, Javan PHP, C#, Ruby).
    • As discussed in a previous meeting, there are some constraints in the length of the objects (files and directories) stored in SWIFT
    • The notion of pseudo-directories was discussed but it is not well understood. Needs revisiting.The next steps is to perform a set of tests similar to the ones performed with Cassandra and Redis, i.e. uploading and downloading files, creating and listing directories (several layers), removing files and directories. The goal is to draw a conclusion on the suitability of SWIFT as a multi-user backend for the FileStore.
  • Cassandra [Wenjing]
    • No further tests performed since the last meeting
    • Wenjing will investigate the reasons of the observed crash of Cassandra during the load tests and look for explanations of the low performance observed in this first test.
  • Discussion [All]
    • Fabio talked about the Database Futures Workshop held at CERN on June 6 and 7. Some exploration of the NoSQL technologies were presented with interesting results.
    • We discussed about the future configuration of the testbed, as the current configuration is limiting. We think that we need a testbed composed of 5 physical machines, each configured as follows:
      • Network: Gbps card at least
      • CPU: 2 CPUs @ 2 GHz, each one having at least 4 (but preferably 8) cores
      • RAM: 2 GB per core
      • Disk: 1 or 2 fast locally attached disks (SATA) each one of 1TB or (better) 2 TB for data only. Having a separate disk for system and swap space highly desired.
