Meeting Minutes - 2010-12-15

Attendants: Wenjing, Ran, Jie, Fabio

Time: 10h30

Secretary: Fabio

  • Fabio briefly presented the motivation and the ideas behind this project of building a file store service for end-user's data. Two key points: convenience (i.e. easy of use) and capacity (significantly more than the capacity the user has on his laptop/desktop).
  • The desired features of the service, the interface the system will expose and the set of operations to be supported were also discussed. See the Project Overview section for more details on this.
  • In addition, we mentioned the technology building blocks that could be used for building an initial prototype of the service. We decided to distribute the work of studying them and make a joint summary. We will start by studying the available products that could be used on the back-end side of the system, as follows:
    • Wenjing will study Cassandra
    • Ran will study OpenStack, in particular the components related to the storage services
    • Jie, who already started to look at HadoopFS, volunteered to contribute on studying this tool in the context of this project
    • Fabio will study Project Voldemort
  • This study of the technology will be done taking into account the potential use of distributed hash table-based data storage products for the ongoing project aiming at collecting and analyzing the data of the flows for the wide area network. This project is lead by Fazhi Qi.
  • We also agreed to read some background material. The reading list can be found in the Resources section.
  • Wenjing will setup a space in IHEP's Twiki that will serve as the central point for sharing information about the project by the people involved in it. Later on, we will consider Trac as a more versatile tool.
  • We agreed to establish a milestone: by the end of January 2011 we will have selected 1 or 2 tools to deploy for more in depth exploration. In the process of reading the material we will establish the evaluation criteria for the candidate tools.
  • Next meetings:
    • Wed. January 5th, 2011
    • By the end of January 2011, before the Chinese New Year holiday period
  • AOB
