Meeting Minutes - 2011-03-22

Attendants: Wenjing, Ran, Jie, Fabio

Time: 14h30

Secretary: Fabio

  • OpenStack Swift [Ran]
    • Ran is preparing the deployment of Swift on the evaluation platform. 5 storage hosts are needed in addition to 1 or 2 hosts for the Proxy and Auth services (those 2 can share the same machine). It is not possible to do some quick tests on a single machine to get familiar with the product.
    • This test environment will allow Ran to understand the mechanisms used by Swift for replication and for supporting network partitioning. In addition, she plans to test the Python API to interact with Swift and also Cyberduck, a desktop application for interacting with files and directories in different backend stores.
    • Ran mentions a potential limitation inherent to Swift: a file name is limited to 256 characters, not including the container. However, Swift makes some encoding of special characters (for instance ' ' [space] is encode as '%20'), which would means that the real limit is lower than 256.
    • The Access Control List (ACL) used by Swift for controlling the access to files are based on the ACLs available on Linux.
  • Cassandra [Wenjing]
    • No big progress since last meeting. Wenjing installed Cassandra in one machine outside of the testbed to turnaround the limitation of the testbed machines which can not reach the outside network. An initial test for modeling the meta-data store using the Cassandra data model was also performed using the Python API. This was inspired by work done by Fabio with the Redis store described here. The documentation of this work will be stored in the Cassandra page of the Technology Exploration section.
    • The next step is to make an initial stress tests (involving several millions files) on the prototype meta-data service to understand the behavior of Cassandra for such a service.
  • Demonstrator [Fabio]
    • Fabio has worked towards preparing a demonstrator of the service. He is being working on a prototype FUSE-based application for mounting a remote FileStore so that the end-user can interact with his files (open them, copy them, ...) by using the tools he is used to in his desktop environment. This work should be the basis of a demonstrator of our ideas that would help use present the project to potential users and get some feedback.
    • The current status of this work was presented during the meeting and it was felt to be useful.
    • The planned work on Project Voldemort is therefore in standby.
  • Other business
  • Next meeting
    • The date of next meeting was not decided during this meeting. We will find a date by e-mail.
